Railway Bridge 17, Chapmans Lane

Whitcher Wildilfe Ltd were commissioned to carry out great crested newt surveys of several ponds surrounding bridge 17 on the ECM5 railway line in North Yorkshire. The surveys identified a small population of great crested newts in two ponds in close proximity to the bridge structure.

Network Rail commissioned Amco Rail to replacment of the bridge structure with the works requiring the setup of a large compound area in the field adjacent to the structure.

Suitable mitigation was agreed and a Natural England European Protected Species licence was applied for. Once the licence was granted Temporary Amphibian Fencing (TAF) was erected around the compound area.

Works are currently being undertaken and Whitcher Wildlife Ltd continue to check the TAF on a regular basis and to carry out maintenance works.
