Surveys General Info

Whitcher Wildlife Ltd carry out a range of surveys from general ecology surveys, Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys to more specific species surveys. All of our surveys are carried out to CIEEM or other appropriate standards with specialised survey techniques and equipment used where necessary.

The findings of our surveys are presented in a comprehensive report including an evaluation of the impacts and appropriate recommendations. Where necessary our survey reports will also include a detailed desktop data search undertaken with the local ecological records centre.

We hold a range of equipment and qualifications that allow species and location specific surveys to be carried out with no delays or additional costs for equipment hire. Please browse our website to find details of the species that we cover and the qualifications and equipment we hold to allow these surveys to be carried out.

Ecology Surveys

The most common form of initial survey that we carry out is a general ecology survey. This form of survey can be undertaken at any time of year. The survey will assess the habitats present on the site and will look for protected fauna species or the potential presence of species on the site and the presence of non-native plant species.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisals / Phase 1 Habitat Surveys

Preliminary Ecological Appraisals / Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys are a basic form of ecological site assessment and can be carried out at any time of year, although certain habitats may need further more detailed assessments at specific times of year; such as grassland surveys in mid-summer, woodland surveys in the spring and heathland surveys in the autumn. The survey method is designed to catalogue and map the various habitats within the site. The survey includes a survey for the presence or potential presence of protected fauna species within the surveyed area.

We carry out Preliminary Ecological Appraisals / Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys to the national guidance standard set out in the CIEEM Guidelines for Preliminary Ecological Appraisal and the JNCC (1990) Handbook for Phase 1 Habitat Surveys.

The findings of the surveys are presented in a comprehensive report including habitat maps showing the specific habitats present on the site prepared using MapInfo Professional, the protected species present on the site, evaluations of the value of the habitats and potential impacts.
