Gimmenbie Burn

Whitcher Wildlife Ltd carried out an initial ecology survey of this railway culvert as part of a package of surveys throughout southern Scotland during early 2015. The survey identified a potential for birds to nest in the vicinity of the structure.

During the nesting season a potential nest was identified on one of the wingwalls of the structure by the contractor during a site meeting with the landowner. Whitcher Wildlife Ltd were therefore commissioned to carry out a further nesting bird survey of the site.

The nesting bird survey identified an active Dippers nest on one of the wingwalls of the structure. The nest was monitored to identify accurately what stage within the nesting process the birds were at. Once this had been identified the nest was then monitored at a time when the young were due to fledge. Once fledging had took place the nest was carefully removed and the works on site commenced.

Whitcher Wildlife Ltd advised that a Dipper nest box should be erected on the site following the work to mitigate for the nest lost during the works.
